چکیده

This chapter addresses the evolutionary roots of the, by and large, uniquely human capacity for helping other people who are not closely related. It is argued that prosocial tendencies have evolved through natural selection pressures associated with the need to solve critical interdependence problems, which can often be modeled as social dilemmas. Solutions to social dilemmas involve engaging in a process of social exchange with others within either dyads or groups. We address the evidence for an evolutionary-based theory of prosocial behavior by linking the concept of social exchange to several key social psychological phenomena, such as negativity effects, loyalty and commitment, forgiveness, empathy and other social emotions, social norms, group identification and xenophobia, group size and stability, and differences in prosocial dispositions. These illustrations suggest the utility of an evolutionary perspective on prosocial behavior. 2

Altruism and Indirect Reciprocity: The Interaction of Person and Situation in Prosocial Behavior

A persistent puzzle in the social and biological sciences is the existence of prosocial behavior, actions that benefit others, often at a cost to oneself. Recent theoretical models and empirical studies of indirect reciprocity show that actors behave prosocially in order to develop an altruistic reputation and receive future benefits from third parties. Accordingly, individuals should stop inve...

Altruistic behavior as a costly signal of general intelligence

Unconditional altruism is an enduring puzzle for evolutionary approaches to social behavior. In this paper, we argue that costly signaling theory, a well-established framework in biology and economics, may be useful to shed light on the individual diVerences in human unconditional altruism. Based on costly signaling theory, we propose and show that unconditional altruistic behavior is related t...

Reciprocal altruism in preschool-aged children

Young children are remarkably prosocial, yet the mechanisms driving their prosociality are poorly understood. In two studies, we looked at whether a need for reciprocity drives children’s prosocial behavior. In Experiment 1, children were given a puzzle task to complete in which they were either missing 2 pieces (experimental group) or not (control group). All children then received 2 puzzle pi...
